The term PC stands for Personal Computer. When computers first became feasible for home and/or personal use about 25 years ago, the industry named them Personal Computers (PCs). Even though computers are very widely used in businesses and corporations, they are still referred to as Personal Computers or PCs. A newer term you also may have heard is the 'Workstation'.

Hardware is the physical components of a computer. They are the electronic circuit boards, micro chips, and other parts which make up the computer. Some examples of hardware components are motherboards, modems, video cards, network interface cards (NICs), disk controller cards, sound cards, cd-rom drives, hard drives, etc.
